Speaker 0 00:04 Hi and welcome to that makes total sense. The podcast where we talk about faith, finance and everyday life in a way that makes total sense. I'm your host Alexis BU city. On this podcast you'll hear the personal stories of friends I'll be interviewing who are doing familiar things in new and innovative ways. We'll answer questions specifically about money and our relationship with it and we'll explore faith and Bible teaching together in all of these. It's not about changing our convictions as much as it is about messing with our methods. We'll have a lot of moments here together where we pause and say that makes total sense.
Speaker 1 00:44 Hi, I'm Alexis <inaudible> and welcome to that makes total sense. Today we have Mike Hickman on the show and I am so excited about Mike's interview. We saw my key is a comedian, actor, musician and we saw him performing live over the summer last year and his act was hilarious. And so while he is a gifted comedian and actor, a musician and he just brings joy to any room that he walks into, it is not because his life has been free from hardship. And so my, it was so gracious today and is sharing the story of a tragedy in his life when he lost his son, but do not be mistaken. This is not, um, an episode with a sad ending. He really, really shares a testimony in his life of how God brought him and his family through this loss. Um, if you're anything like me, you will laugh and cry during the course of this conversation. So I'm so glad you've joined us. Enjoy this episode today. This conversation I had with Christian comedian, Mike Hickman. Hey everybody. I am Alexis B SETI. Welcome to that makes total sense. Today. You guys don't know this, but we have a long awaited guests on the show today. Comedian, Mike Hickman. Hey Mick. Hey Mike.
Speaker 1 02:26 This is going to be crazy. None of this is planned. You know, you know, it won't get edited out now that all of that, now that you said that, Seth, we'll for sure keep that for sure. Keep that in. Alexis, how are you? I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Thanks. Oh my goodness. I'm so excited to have you on the show. The reason that I said this was long awaited is because Mike and I met at a comedy show anyway. We met in Galveston when you were doing a show with Bob. Um, and we talked about you coming on the show. Bob came on pretty quickly after that actually, and you and I just could not get our calendars together.
Speaker 2 03:09 Bob has nothing to do, so you know, it's a <inaudible>
Speaker 1 03:12 we'll tag him in this. So he for sure sees it. Yeah. But it really has, it's been like six months and I just kept telling sad, my husband, I just kept saying this is going to be God's perfect timing when Mike comes on the show because we finally got it all together. And so I feel like here we are recording this. I would say in the middle of coven 19 quarantine, but I really don't know where on the spectrum <inaudible>
Speaker 2 03:39 yeah, we don't know if it's in the middle, but we're, we're uh, we're a few weeks in,
Speaker 1 03:43 we're a few weeks in. So who better to have a conversation with when you're in the middle of quarantine then it comedian.
Speaker 2 03:50 Yeah. And go ahead and get someone that's sick anyway, you know, and let's just talk to someone that needs a doctor and let him on the show. So ironic. And by the way, excuse my voice a little bit. I'm a little bit of a horse like this, so if I start sounding somewhat old man Jewish, uh, I did a, about three hours ago I was on, I was on a, I did a two hour radio show this afternoon. I've got a little <inaudible> so it's not COBIT. It's nothing like that. It's just tired throat person, that's all. But anyway, I hope you'll excuse that. But uh, if it gets too bad then I'll just go into the Jewish voice and we'll just do that.
Speaker 1 04:31 I'm so excited. I, I mean it was pretty bad. It was pretty bad. Yeah, I don't, I don't, I'm not sure what it was really. I think we're both, I don't know. Maybe there's something going on with the corn gene. I was actually, we were talking earlier about just housekeeping before we started pressing record and I'm like super disappointed. Oh, here we go. Dogs, kids. It's all happening at the same time right now.
Speaker 2 04:56 Warranting, does Katie have quarantine? It's like, Oh yeah, those people, I do remember when we were all here together. But usually you're, everyone's together for maybe 30 minutes or an hour a day.
Speaker 1 05:06 Right? All the time. We're living the dream right now. We're all living the dream and I can't even remember. Oh, because I was going to say I'm disappointed that people are not going to be able to see this. I'm disappointed. This is not like a YouTube, um, episode because Mike obviously comedian stage presence, facial expressions. It's all here, the whole package. So you guys are going to have to go see my onstage to get the full effect because right now we just have, we just had the Jewish voice. We just have the horse. We just have the audio for the episode. We just have the majority per day. So my, give us some context for like you, your career, your family, um, you know, just kind of like the, the high view of, of who you are and where you're living, your quarantine life these days.
Speaker 2 05:57 Oh yeah. Well we are, we're here right in the middle of Texas. We're just right outside of Austin, Texas. It's actually a little town called Burnet. But when I travel, I, you know, you, you say what landmark is closest to you, which is a Austin for us. So we're riding in the middle and quarantine for us has been, um, a little weird because, you know, they're letting people still work that are doing essential work. Apparently comedy work is not as essential work. So I'm home a little bit, a little bit more than my wife. She is a mental health technician, uh, at a place I used to be a mental health technician. Uh, it's a residential treatment center for teenagers. And uh, which is ironic because I was a comedian in a working in a mental health facility and having to bite my tongue every day.
Speaker 2 06:50 I mean, I loved the kids I worked with and all, but there's so much material and I can, I could not, you know, the scripture that says, you know, Lord be the gatekeeper over my lifts. It was a gate and a steel door curtain and locks and things like that. I'm like, I really have things to say right now, you know, and, and you can't. But anyways, she's, she's back and forth to work and um, I'm using this time for, um, for writing. Uh, my podcast is back up. Um, I Mmm. My time normally split it cause I'm, I'm primarily a comedian but I'm also an actor and so I do a lot of, uh, acting jobs as well. Mostly background acting with some features here and there. So that's all gone right now too, cause none of that is filming as well. Um, then third, I, I seen in things I guess.
Speaker 2 07:41 So there's, there's not really any of that going on. So I'm at home, uh, with creative stuff going everywhere in the studio, writing new material, getting the podcasts done, uh, parody songs, doing all the things when you wish you had time, when it speeds. Like, when am I going to get to that video? When am I going to get you to do this? What am I going to get it? Well now it's kind of that time. It's not necessarily bringing in in funds, but at the same time, God is teaching a lot of cool things and, um, you know, we're doing, doing what we can do. Um, my wife and I, we've, we've been married. You asked about family. Uh, my wife been a, we'd been married for 15 years in a row and, uh, it's, it's great. And so, um, let's see. And we have our, our daughter Sarah, and she just turned 18 and began college. And so, so that, that's kind of a new venture going on right there too. Ooh. Uh, she is home. Yes. So she was traveling back and forth to school. She, it's funny, she has a, um, this, this, she's only taking one class right now. Then she'll, she'll be taking more later. So this spring she started with this one class, um, this anatomy and physiology class, which meets, um, at a town about an hour from here. And
Speaker 1 08:56 her, uh, instructor is very old school. Uh, and so she was going there and it's just like if you went to class in college in 1975, it's just like that you go in, it's the attendance, it's the whole thing. And so when they said, well, we w the college wants to switch everything to online, um,
Speaker 2 09:19 yeah, he's not going to do that because he's, she's, he said, ma, we're just gonna, I'm gonna just gonna open up the class. I'm going to teach the class all day and we're going to come in 10 students at a time that you can have, uh, up to 10 students spread out. Exactly. But there's no way. He's like, I don't know how to switch that to make this an online thing. I've done it the same way for 937 years, you know, not going to change. So thankfully she's probably going to test out of the class. He actually emailed her the test and said, if you can pass these, you don't have to come anymore. Amen. And she's a genius. She's so much smarter than, than me. She, she, I don't know. She gets it from her mom.
Speaker 1 10:02 Oh my goodness. Well, hopefully she can pass and be done.
Speaker 2 10:06 Yeah, I hope so. And I'm just all over the map here with, with just giving you info. That's my family. We're in Texas, we're quarantined, we're working in. We're not working. That's kind of where we're at.
Speaker 1 10:18 Oh my goodness. I mean, that's where we're, that's where we're all at these days, right? I mean, we're home for kids 10 and under. We are homeschooling, online schooling, trying to get things set up. My husband is working from home and today I was trying to do a little bit of work and then realized I didn't have a device to work on because everyone in the family had, you know, I've got like my fourth graders and my second grader are on devices and I don't have anything to send an email.
Speaker 2 10:59 Your, your kids, they're, they're homeschooling and y'all are home. They should graduate this week,
Speaker 1 11:03 right? I think so. I honestly think so. All of them. Yeah. The problem is they can't join the workforce right now if they graduate this week. So what's the hurry? Right. Exactly. I mean, they could go work at Chick-fil-A because that's, that's a real thing in Houston right now. Like, I don't know what, I don't know what people would do. I guess they wouldn't eat it. Chick-fil-A was not open right now. Right. Because, you know,
Speaker 2 11:29 yeah, a lot of the, a lot of the restaurants there, you know, they're still doing the takeout and still doing, um, uh, you know, drive through and things like that. Cause they're, they're considered essential. A lot of people, they don't know how to cook. People don't cook. And that's why you need so much toilet papers for eating their own cooking for the first time.
Speaker 1 11:46 Saw the ad the other day and I was cracking up. I may or may not, my mom will listen to this. I may or may not called my mom and it's like, mom, I just saw this meme about you. She's like, we've got two more this week than we have in 20 years. I'm like, yeah, I know you're the people that are talking about
Speaker 2 12:05 it all makes sense now. Well, my family, we all cook. We all love to cook. So, um, you know, it's not a problem there. It's as long as there's, there's food around or something. I mean my, my daughter is actually vegan. She can just go in the backyard and grab some yard work and make a salad, you know, rake some bark off the tree. She's like, I'm fine. That's fine. No problem. It's all good. I'm going to survive. I'm like, you're definitely are going to survive.
Speaker 1 12:32 We're good. Yeah, we're good too. We, I, I cook tonight for the first time in a while cause we've been trying to do those like big dishes, you know, so we don't have to cook every single day and um, yeah, but it's just been kind of crazy. Um, so let's talk about, I feel like, okay. Drive through. This was the thing when, when we saw you in Galveston, you know what I'm going to say? Cause I can see it on your face. You're talking about on a certain bit because here was it. Here was the thing, we went to the show, not having any idea what to expect. Uh, some friends of ours called and said, Hey, we've got tickets to this, um, Christian comedy show and you know, do you want to come? And so we're like, sure, that sounds great. Um, I may or may not be married to someone who, for example, really does not like Christian movie.
Speaker 1 13:35 And so going to a kind of a quote Christian comedy show, I just think we just didn't really know what to expect, but we just don't really know. You just don't really know. But we laughed our tails off all mine. We just laughed our tails off all night. And I think, I think I may have seen my husband tear up a little bit when you started singing about, because he was laughing that hard. This is the, this is what you need to have to do it. You don't have to know this, but my husband and I just don't share it.
Speaker 2 14:13 The phone did I say, what was it? It was one of the parody songs.
Speaker 1 14:16 You did a water burger bit.
Speaker 2 14:19 Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 14:20 You did a full song. It was hilarious. My husband doesn't cry real tears very often, but I have seen, we've been married, uh, I don't know, seven, almost 17 years. And I have seen him tear up more from laughing then I have from actual sadness. But that doesn't even happen that often. He just kind of has to be caught off guard. And I think that caught him off guard.
Speaker 2 14:49 Oh yeah. That song was a, a parody to uptown funk called upset Tom, I think is if I did the water burger bit right before that. That basically is the water burger.
Speaker 1 15:01 Yeah, no, it was, it was hilarious. But I, so I mean that's on YouTube people. Maybe I'll link that or something if that's okay with you. People should watch that cause it's hilarious. But part of the reason that I wanted to have you on the show in the first place is because not just because your comedy is hilarious and you're hilarious because you are, but you talk about some hard stuff in your act and, and where God has met you, I guess, um, in that, so can we go there?
Speaker 2 15:34 Yeah, absolutely. Sure. Yeah. God, God wastes nothing. He, uh, if he, if he doesn't want us to talk about testimonies and things, I mean, he, one of the reasons we, we go through things is to, uh, you know, tell people in, testify what God has done in us through us and also that the ministry keeps going. It'd be very selfish to keep, keep those stories and things to ourself, you know? Yeah. Um, so, uh, you're referring to, to, you know, our son and, and what had happened just five years ago and that, uh, I, I guess that's what, that's what you're referring to.
Speaker 1 16:09 Yeah, I am. And just so the listeners know, I'm like, I'm not trying, I'm, I'm, I'm like you, you, you, you referred to working at the youth facility and I'm like, I used to be, I'm a case worker, um, and I worked with children and families back in the day kind of in my previous life. And so I'm not really necessarily averse to talking about hard things. I have to have a lot of hard, I have had to have a lot of hard conversations, but I did tell Mike, um, because like I said, it's taken us like six months to get this, to get the show on the road between us. And so in one of the last correspondence that we had, you actually mentioned, cause we were kind of talking about what are we going to talk about and you mentioned, Hey, you know, we can, we can talk about my son if you want. And I told him before we started recording, you know, I just thanked him for that because I just said I really, I kind of wanted to talk about his son and about, um, the testimony that that brought, but I didn't really even have the courage to ask. Um, and so, yeah. And so I don't think I realized it was just five years ago. That's feels I have five years in some, in some respects feels like forever, but in some respects it feels so fresh. Right. It was
Speaker 2 17:21 about five, five and a half years ago now. And, uh, so basically what, what had happened was it was our, it was our son's birthday and we'd had a dinner, we'd had a dinner that night, and we're going to go is, I'm going to talk more about what, what God has done and brought us through, but to give you some backstory to the listener of what happened to facilitate God's ministry in our life there. Um, so our son, we had, we started a gathering at our house with just him, two friends. We had some dinner. Uh, then he was going to go over to their house and was gonna play music. They were all musicians. Um, and so basically the next day, um, we, he was going to come home or around noon, uh, sometime like that. And, and I had gotten a call from a friend of mine that had said, uh, Hey man, um, I'm in Dallas and, and I, uh, there's just no words.
Speaker 2 18:16 There's no words. I'm sorry. And I didn't understand the voice message. And I called him back. I said, Hey, what are you doing water in the yard? I dunno, uh, what your voice messages is about. He goes, um, hang on, let me call you back. And so he had called the chief of police who, um, had found out that our son had had been shot, uh, 11 times at his birthday party at the second part of his birthday party, um, uh, the night before, and we didn't know. And he, he told the chief of police, the, the family doesn't even know. And so, um, so we had found out within, of course, that hour and all that, that something had happened that night when one of the boys had, um, had taken something and had an altercation with another kid and got so angry. Um, and that he had taken, um, uh, a rifle and, and had killed one the other boy.
Speaker 2 19:14 Uh, then it, they said it looked like our son was trying to stop him. And in his statement he said, I don't know why I just turned the gun on him too. And so, uh, so our son was killed that night. And, um, so, Mmm. So that young man who I fed a steak dinner to that night, you know, hugged on the way out and said, y'all have fun. Um, a was an instrument two in two lives that night. And, um, you know, he's, he's doing life now and, and I can't really talk too much about that, but, but you know, we like, this isn't real. This is, this is not happening. How, how old was he? 17. Wow. Yeah, he just turned 17. And, uh, Christian loves Jesus. Um, Oh, it was actually, uh, you know, ministering to the boy who had pulled the trigger and, and, um, he, and we're were wondering, you know, how this, this just can't be real. And it became very real, you know, over the day. And, um, and when we F, and I'm not going to go too much into detail about, about that, other than immediately God began to minister to us already. Um, every emotion you can, you can, uh, imagine lands at one time where it's, it's anger, trust, fear, doubt. You, you, you name it. Weeping. Um, what do we do? I mean, that night he was in, he was in band also in high school and they were <inaudible> in band. And,
Speaker 3 20:48 and they said, will you come talk to the students? I mean, that night. And we're like, you want us to talk to your students tonight? And, uh, but then we felt God immediately say, yes, go do that. So we went. So within hours we were talking to the student body of his, uh, of his friends and bringing them comfort and, and talking to them. And by comforting others, somehow we were comforted. And so that's only God's strength cause we didn't have any strength in our legs to, to, uh, to even be able to walk. So it's testimony already right off the bat that it is God who gives strength and, and, um, uh, Philippians two 13 that says, for it is God who works in you to will and to act, uh, according to his good purpose. And so, um, you know, my wife had volunteered in knees and said, God, we will trust you. We will trust you. Uh, trust you. We know when we're about to go through all these emotions, but this is the moment, your finest hour when you realize, okay, everything that I said I believe about God. Do I really? Right.
Speaker 1 21:54 I mean, when, when you're talking, I'm even thinking to myself like, this is so real. You know, like God, he's either just real or is it, you know, like he's, he's, he's so real. Like how do you take that scripture and say, because this is the truth. I can go and talk to my son's friends then the next day, how do you, how do you do that?
Speaker 3 22:23 Yeah. That, that's where the rubber meets the road is like I say, I believe it's about God. Now I have to live that. And, uh, immediately also my wife and I gave her each other permission to <inaudible> I want to take care of her. I want to hug her. I want to be right there. I want to just, you know, and we all needed to grieve. Um, you know, my wife, my daughter, myself, and so we gave each other this permission, like grief, however you want. We're not gonna ask anything of each other. If we need each other, we will, you know, we will, we'll say well, but just know that we're all in support. If we're, if, you know, if I need to go out in our field, we had 10 acres of land. If I need to go out in our field and stream and I'm going to do that and it's okay and nobody has to worry, it's just me grieving.
Speaker 3 23:03 If, if I'm overly laughing at a time and just feeling you for it, that's okay too. You know, if, uh, you know, if we want to go for a walk, that's fine. If I want to be alone, that's fine and it's neat to give each other those permissions. So, you know, God was teaching us a lot about depending on him without having to make sure that, you know, each other is okay and so that we don't put off our own grieving. Um, so as, as days and weeks go on, I mean I'm, I'm uh, there's no way to give you the long stories. I will be giving you the, the short story cause there's so much, you know, and it probably so much I wish I would have said after the podcast is over, like, Oh, I wish I hadn't said that cause that was so good what God did.
Speaker 3 23:45 Um, but we are, um, uh, we're getting days or we're getting, um, you know, several days down the road and up and down with emotions and all, but, and there's a lot of people at our house all the time. And um, and so one day I was out jogging and this is when this is just still, just brings me to tears in a joyful way. I'm out jogging and I was missing him really hard that day. And I said, God, I need to hear from you today. I really need something to know that it is you. Because I really miss him and God hears us and he knows how individually we need to hear things and how we understand his presence. And I'm a comedian. I'm a, um, you know, uh, I understand things in, in creative different ways. And so I'm jogging and I see something shiny up at the side of the road on the left.
Speaker 3 24:42 Okay. So add comedian, I see something shiny. So I run. So I run over and see it and I'm like, why am I so drawn to this? Like I had to go to it and I looked down and it's a car mirror that had been knocked off the side of a car. I'm like, why am I looking at this? And the mirror part was facing up. And uh, as I picked it up, I noticed, you know, it was reflecting the clouds in the sky and all that. You know, the place where, where, uh, you know, the presence of God, the heavens, uh, heaven place where sun is, I'm like, Oh, that's neat. And then I look at the bottom of the mirror and it says, objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
Speaker 3 25:25 So I take this mirror and I'm laughing and I'm jogging back to the house to show my wife. I said, this is how God works. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear because it reflects, you know, where God and where, where is our son is and where we're going to be able to spend Aternity with them. And it's like, yeah. And the revelation, I said, God, is there more here? Is it deeper than that? He's like, yeah, Oh, it's so much deeper than that because he said, let me put this right, that um, you know, every, every day that we move forward without trying to get stuck in the past and stuck in the past as we start to get a few steps ahead and like, wait, we're moving away from the moment that we last. He was here and alive right here. And God said no.
Speaker 3 26:13 It, every moment you take a step forward and you're moving forward, it's one more day closer to seeing him again. And even better than that, spending eternity in heaven where he is, but in the presence of Jesus. And then it goes even deeper. It's like your son is alive right now, just somewhere else. You know, he's, he's doing life right now in another realm, but he's alive right now with me. He's alive. You're living right here and he's living right here with me. You're still side by side. He's so close, you just can't see him but you will in a little while. And so God shows things like that that brings so much hope. Like it really, it's just going to be a little while and it creates an urgency. Like, do you know Jesus? And so it made me want to like, how am I ever going to do comedy again?
Speaker 3 27:04 How am I ever going to bring laughter to people and all it's like Hmm. Because I have to because God that we're not here that long, there's not a whole lot of time left. You know, we, we only have so many years that we can bring that joy to people and let people know that God is our strength, you know? And um, and I'll say at the end of my comedy shows, uh, many times if you grinned tonight, if you laughed, if you chuckle this because the joy of the Lord is our strength. Cause we're all going to go through things and at different levels, catastrophic or mild or medium or somewhere in there. But when we can laugh in the middle of that, we're showing that we're trusting in God to give us his strength and his joy. And that's okay. Um, one other thing is, it was just a couple of months later, it was Christmas and the first Christmas, you know, there's always the first stuff that happens without him.
Speaker 3 27:56 It's like, Oh my gosh. So we're starting to put presents under the tree and I look and there's, there's no gifts under the tree for him. So it was like, wow, how sad that there's a gift for me. There's a gift for my wife. There's gift for my daughter. There's gift for grandparents. There's, there's no gifts for my son with the tree for the first time. Then just like the mirror, God says, yes. What I have to say to you, so what is it, Lord? He said, what kind of stuff could you buy him at Walmart compare he has right now? I was like, Oh my gosh, what could I possibly get him? Here's to being in the presence of God, no tears, no morning sickness with no pain. Knowing that, wow, the things that he's not going to have to go through in his life, you know, the pain that he's not going to have to endure the quarantine, he's not going to.
Speaker 3 29:04 And then yes, God goes even deeper and said, you on earth, you're celebrating the birthday of my son Jesus. But your son is at the party. Wow. I'm laughing at the top of my lungs after that going, wow, this is a great Christmas because he graduated. He's where we all want to be out there first. I'm almost mad at him a little bit cause he got, cause he got there first, but in a little while we're going to be there. I had to cancel comedy shows that week. Um, I was doing a schedule that week to do, uh, we were on tour with two friends of mine. Um, Peter Wolf and Kristen Webber. There were two dear Christian friends, great comics. And, uh, I called them and I said, obviously, we're not going to do a show this week. You know, and other people say, no, people need to laugh. Do the show. I'm like, I'm not doing a show this week. And so they said, totally. We, they said, we understand it was other people that were like, no, the community needs to laugh. I'm like, they'll laugh later. Right.
Speaker 3 30:14 Um, so just, um, several weeks later, uh, we rescheduled that for later, but a few weeks later I did have a solo show that I did not cancel. I said, okay, God shown us a lot. He's shown me that people hurt. How am I going to do this comedy show? I'm not going to cancel it. I don't feel like I'm supposed to cancel it. I, um, I'm going to go do it. And so, and I had a lot of, uh, at least what I mean by that is, okay, I've been to this church before. I at least it's, it's a church. They have great sound system. It's inside. Um, there was like a, you know, it's a thousand seat auditorium. It's this great church. They, they know me, they know my comedy, all the companies, at least all those things are in place to where this'll be a comfortable transition.
Speaker 3 31:07 I'll go and I'll do the show and not sure what I'm going to do at the end of the show, but I'm just going to go do the show. So I get there taking comfort in the fact that it's going to be comfortable because it's everything's in place. All right, so we get there and why we're there. They said, Oh, I didn't tell you you're going to be on a flatbed trailer outside. So this is, this is in the afternoon. In the summer or uh, well, late fall and it's hot. It's about 98 a hundred degrees. And so there's no air conditioning. There is no auditorium, a tiny little bitty sound system that I'm not sure. No ma'am, no monitors. And I do music on stage, more variety show. Um, I said, okay, so those comforts are gone and it's going to be hot and they just had lunch after church and I'm going to do the show while they have full bellies on empathy.
Speaker 3 32:08 Then I look out and they have set up a tent probably about, um, 50 yards from the stage. So those people would be in the shade. So there's a stage on the flatbed trailer, a field I then, and in comedy it's up close. It has close. Yeah. And so I said, Oh God. So every comfort that I was taking stock in, everything I'd put my trust in was completely ripped away. No sound. The crowd is far away. It's hot. It's all of those things, uh, were taken away where I could really only trusting God. I could not trust in the themes that I was trusting in. That was quite honestly, if I'm sure I didn't, I didn't know. I don't know that I said, Lord, I trust you. This is going to be a good show. I said, well, at least there's this, at least there's this and listen to this.
Speaker 3 33:01 So the last thing I'm about to go up on this stage, and um, they're just about to introduce me. And the youth pastor was there behind at the side of the trailer with me and he said, Oh, when you were here last time, um, you said your son plays clarinet and band. Right. And he didn't know my story. I mean they didn't know what had just happened. And so right before I go on stage, he brings that up and I went, ah, okay. I said, uh, he did. Yes, he, he was in band. Um, but uh, <inaudible> he, he died three weeks ago and the look on his face was, I mean I had to cut to the chase. There wasn't, I mean they were about to me and he went, Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know. And I said, you know what, it's going to be okay. I said, look over there. And my wife and his wife, I could tell my wife just told his wife what had happened cause they were over by March table praying together. I said, I can guarantee I know what they're praying about right now. And I said, everything's going to be fine. Started to have some peace. And as I took a walk up the steps when they introduced me, as soon as I stepped onto that trailer stage, it was like, God put this robe of peace on me.
Speaker 3 34:22 I uh, this is so cool because there's has to be God. This cannot be planned. I step onto the trailer and I turn one speaker towards me. So there's my monitor and I just thought, just go turn that one speaker over here. All the students that had been there before came and filled in in front of the trailer, no one told them to. They just came and just fill that area like, thank you Lord. I didn't feel hot. I didn't feel nauseous. Not one thought of tragedy entered my mind. It was as if God said he's the comedian and he's going to speak through me now and he performed that comedy show, one of the best shows I've ever done up to that point, I feel when I got off state, just chills like, Oh my goodness, I can't believe what just happened in the pastor who didn't know my story, met me at the side of the stage.
Speaker 3 35:23 He goes, do you do this for a living? I said, yes, I do this for a living. He goes, good. He goes, that was, that was incredible, and I'm not saying that. Kudos for me. I'm saying this had to be God because what? It could have potentially just I could have broken down on stage with just heaviness. Gus said, I'm not going to allow that. That's when the scripture, Philippians two 13 come to mind for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to your good purpose and God validated this comedy ministry that this is a ministry, that this is not you, Mike Hickman on stage saying and doing these things. It's your personality. It's it's your body, you're the vessel, but it really is me. God, your God who is going to work through you to accomplish the purpose that I put in you to tell people about Jesus and, and I had not known this before, but one of my tee shirts had Luke six 21 on it said, bless it.
Speaker 3 36:21 Are they that weep now for they shall laugh. It was just a scripture I like when I was looking up scriptures that had laughter in it and now suddenly all that meaning became rushing forward. Blessed are they that weep now for they shall laugh. So he showed me that, but now God immediately began to say, member, it's me. And now I'm like, all this ministry just became different. I must do this. And I had ended up after that show with more passion to um, to use comedy, to lead people to Jesus, to, to give hope to those that are hurting inside and to equip people to bring God's joy to other, other people. Because now I'm hurting. And in any crowd, there's going to be people that hurt too. Now I feel like I, I know what it feels like to hurt really, really bad than though we're still hurting and we still move through things. God shows that. Do you see how kingdom purpose is everywhere we turn in everything that you experience it, everything that you do, God will use all of that to bring him glory but also to bring us closer to him. And so <inaudible> that is actually the short story.
Speaker 1 37:34 No, it's, it's so beautiful. And there are, there's so many things going through my head right now. Um, but the first is just, thank you. <inaudible>. Thank you for sharing that because it's, it's, it's so, it's so personal for you, but if it is like you started off, if we don't, you know, yes, there are, there are some things in our lives that we're going to keep private in there. You know, they're only between us and God or our loved ones or, but, but when, but when God calls people out to share their stories and to share their testimonies, that it's just an incredibly powerful tool that he uses to bring people to himself. Um, I know not everybody's going to be able to share their stories, but when you can, when God gives you that freedom to do that, um, it's just amazing.
Speaker 3 38:36 It's just, it's just amazing. So, so that's the first thing is just thank you. And there's so many other things with, but I mean, his friends, people came to know Jesus. Uh, people can close with the Lord people. God got their attention. They remembered a testimony and words that my son had said. So, I mean, if, if my son had known that people would come to know Jesus and it took something like him dying to get their attention enough for that to happen. I mean, my son would give a nod to that. He would say, yeah, I'll, I'll die for that if this guy comes to know Jesus, he goes, I'm ready to go. You know, he knew he was ready. It wasn't like, no, he was a good kid. He probably went to have it. No, this, no. Our son Eli knows Jesus and uh, and there's no, no doubt about that. And so the ripple effect that it wasn't that he just died and he's not here anymore. How sad and God comforted us is that people are going to be in heaven that weren't in heaven before.
Speaker 1 39:35 Right.
Speaker 3 39:36 He was already going to go there. And so when the word of God says that God has numbered, has purposed every day, he knows the number of the days and he knows it. He's like, that was his purpose. It was, it was fulfilled. He filled it. And we want you mad that God took your son. I'm like, he didn't take our son. He, he gave us his son for 17 years. Why would I be angry that he gave it? We could've never had him. How about that? That would've been the tragedy. You know? No, he belonged to God. He let us parent him for 17 years on the earth. You know, what a gift we got. You know, so, and those are the perspectives that you get when, when God lives those things and show, I mean, shows those things to you, uh, in your life when you have to live out what you say you believe about him.
Speaker 1 40:30 That's right. That's right. And <inaudible> and that's a, that's a perspective that I think we can all take in the big things and the small things, um, that it's not about what's gone or what we don't have, but, um, but looking at what we, what would you have or what we've had the opportunity to have, that's so good. Um, when you were talking about the show that, that first show that you just shared and, um, and you said, you know, that God really did that, you know, you really did that show through you. And, um, and I feel like, okay, Mike, you know that there are some people out there to think God is not a comedian.
Speaker 1 41:20 He's just as, he's just a stuffed shirt, you know, this is, this is like, like, like sharing, sharing the gospel through <inaudible> laughter. Like is that irreverent? Is that okay? Is that something we can do? Like God, like it just struck me like, God a comedian. Are you kidding me right now? I mean, I'm thankful. I believe it, but I mean, what, what's, what's your, do you ever get any kind of who you probably don't? Cause why would, I wouldn't be going to your show if they thought if they're real real stuff, shirts themselves. But I mean, but it's like, I think that there's a, there's something about like the fear of God and the reverence and the seriousness, you know, of these things. And every time we see Jesus on a felt board or in a gospel movie, he's kind of got his eyebrows down and he's talking in an English accent and he's very, you know, serious all the time. And it's like, but, but like you said, there's so many scriptures about like, you just had to pick one for your shirt, but how many are there on laughter and joy? And you know, all of those things that God brings us, like
Speaker 3 42:31 Brian, it will sometimes people go into an extreme thought about if they're thinking Jesus on stage telling jokes, doing stand up. You're like, Hey everybody, what do you get when you cross it? It's not that, it's that God uses the personality of his people. He puts the inspiration and the joy. I mean he, he wrote hymns and he write songs and he, and he gives dramas to people and he, he, he gives all of that through the vessels of his people. When I say God did that show, I mean I couldn't have done it without him. And he, you, he do his inspiration. He puts the thoughts in the head. He puts the motions in there, uh, that, that scripture, I'll say this for the third time because I always need to be reminded of it. Philippians two 13, for it is God who works in us to willing to act according to his will.
Speaker 3 43:16 So if God doesn't do those things, that makes the Bible out to be a lie, he says for it is God who works in you. Which means if I say it was me that did that show, then I'm a liar. Uh, and to will and to act according to his good purpose. Well that was his purpose for me to do that. I've heard that calling on my life. And so that is him doing that. It's not like he just possesses you and the, Oh my God, I have no control over my arm. Not, it's not that, but it's, it's, um, it's just revelation of, of, of what to say and do in the moment. Cause many Christians, when you've, maybe you've counseled with somebody, you've given advice to someone, you're like, wow, I didn't know I was going to say that, but it felt natural as you were saying it.
Speaker 3 44:00 You know, uh, some, if you tell someone about the Lord and you're, and you're nervous, I don't know what I'm going to say, what if they were J uh, then it comes out and it's like, wow, that had to be God because I, I couldn't said that. But at that moment it's, it feels like you, it feels natural. But afterwards you're like, I didn't know. You know, some people are sitting down to to write songs and they're like, they'll, it, you know, and you feel that God's given you these lyrics to the songs and you're like, wow, that is more poetic than, than I can really come up with. But yet it is coming
Speaker 1 44:32 through you because God uses your experiences and your circumstances to, to write because that's how he loves us. That way, you know, we, we can give glory to him. Everything points, points back to him. But isn't that so, I just think it's, it's just such a cool, it's just such a cool picture when you're telling that story about how creative God is. You know,
Speaker 3 44:56 the first thing that we heard about him in the Bible, what's the very first thing the word of God tells us he was creator, right? And if we're made in his image and we are creators and it's his, his, um, creativeness because we're in his image and that, that comes through us because we're his children by inheritance, by, by being his children. If we believe we are children of God, then we have the, I mean, we're, we're not, we're not God and we're not, that's not what I'm saying, but God in his working through those things. But the very first thing the Bible told us was that he was creative,
Speaker 1 45:29 right? It's just when, when, when you're telling that, and I'm like, he's so cute. He's so creative too, to work that through you. And then thinking about how it's the comfort with which we were comforted that we comfort others. Right? And it's like the, you know, there's, there's the, there's the leveling, which is right. And so like my husband helped him. I love him so much. He is a hugger. He is a physical affection person. And when he's comforted, it's a hug. And I'm, and I, that's just not my, it's just not me, you know? But I, I think about that and I'm like, but for a lot of us, for a lot of people it's, it's what you bring. It's laughter, it's joy. It's that emotion, that feeling of being able, like you said, you can greet, you gave each other permission to grieve how you needed to and how you wanted to in some times that was going to look like laughter.
Speaker 1 46:25 But it's, it's like for others, God gave you through his creativity, the gift, not just to, you know, create a, a comedy routine or an act, but to comfort his people in the way that would minister to them through laughter and joy. And for some people it's a hug. And for some people it's a sweet card. And for some people it's food on the doorstep. And for some people it's all of those things at different times. And for some people, like you said, every time you do a show, there are going to be people in the crowd who are hurting.
Speaker 3 47:04 Oh. So many times people would come. A lot of ministry happens after, after the stage is closed, right? Merge table. That's one reason I love having a merge table. Not just to sell a bunch of tee shirts and things because I get to talk to people individually. And so many times, um, I D I did one recently in, uh, in Houston where the lady said, um, it was two or three years, I think three years today that, uh, we lost our daughter in a car accident and we, we, we came tonight, you know, that was on our minds. Uh, then you gave some testimony, um, and uh, at the end of your show about what God had done. Cause that's exactly what we needed to hear tonight. And we ended up praying together. We, we probably spent a half an hour together after the show just praising God and thanking him that, uh, you know, for his love and his and his mercy and his grace and, and uh, and then we then allowed God's people to connect and got to people connect, you know, more things happen and it just goes on and on and on.
Speaker 3 48:07 The ripple effect of what God does when we're, when we're obedient and, uh, I love the ministry off the stage. He has the, the laughter and bringing joy and helping people laugh in the middle of circumstances is great. Then I'll give a brief testimony at the end of the show, but it's not after that. Sometimes there's other messages later on and, and it's just, but just becomes life. You're just living in a, okay, I'll be on the stage for that hour, but I'm at home here answering this email about this or for at the grocery store. And it's just Christians doing their thing, uh, being prompted by God and being obedient to those promptings. However, however that is for some, it's with the microphone. For some, it's the checker at the grocery store, you know?
Speaker 1 48:50 Right. It's so good. I'm reminded. Um, so we mentioned at the beginning that we're doing this during quarantine and we're taping the, she's like scratching. Yes. Quarantine. I get it. We're all home together. She's a little excited about it. She doesn't have quite the I time she used to, but I was listening to a story on the radio about a man who was younger than me who had passed away from the virus and the, they were interviewing his parents and, um, the host said, you know, is there anything else that you would like for the people to know about your son before we sign off? And, and, um, and he said, you know, with a few things and <inaudible> and they were, they were nice and they were fine. And, and, um, so I get home and I'm eating leftovers and I just, I had just been in the car and anyway, I was eating leftovers.
Speaker 1 49:54 My husband says, what are you thinking about? And I said, Oh, don't ask me that right now. You know, I'm like, uh, how many grams? Six I'm kind of a, you know, just like in my, in my head a lot, you know, and <inaudible> can I say no, I want to know. He's kind of doing the dishes and sort of just telling them about the story. And I said, I know, it's so sad. And, um, just all of this, you know, I said part of it is, you know, I started thinking when I die, if someone were to ask that about me, I would just want them to say she really loved Jesus. You know, I don't, yeah, I don't know how many other things I really care, you know about that they say so much. And I said, I want to know. I'm thinking about as I'm, you know, eating my enchiladas.
Speaker 1 50:47 Um, how do I live the kind of life that when I die, people say about me. Um, she just really left Jesus, you know, and, um, and I wasn't thinking about our conversation. Um, and, but just now I was reminded of that because I think this is what you've said of your son, you know, um, he just really loves Jesus. And, um, and now God has been reminding you for the past five years. Like, he really loves me, you know, like he's, it's not a, it's not a past tense thing. Um, it's a, it's a present tense thing. And so, um, and so thank you, because that's, that's, um, that's a comfort to me right now. Even even with everything that's going on and things feel uncertain, um, for almost everyone, right? Kind of in the world, they feel uncertain, you know, but it's like this, this conversation in your testimony about your son and about God through those difficulties is like, he, um, he is so stable.
Speaker 1 52:03 He is so present. He is so now, um, he is so faithful. Um, you know, he is, um, he is so worthy. He is, he's just so worthy. So, um, I don't know. I don't think I want to ask you this same question, um, because I do, but I do want to honor your son and honor your son's memory. But I would say, um, maybe as we close out, is there anything that you would want people to know about God, about how we minister to you and about your son, um, in these last few years that you've experienced?
Speaker 3 52:50 Well, something I said on, on a radio show earlier today was many times we live our life and our decisions and our outlook on feeling. And God can certainly use our feelings. Um, and we, we have all these feelings, you know, anger, sadness, you name it, happiness, joy. Um, well joy is as much a feeling as happiness, but, okay. Um, but then there's truth that we, we get to stand on. Um, let me tell you what I mean. For instance, there's many times we feel like God may not be near a, if someone's listening, they feel like God doesn't love me, or he doesn't know what I've done. Or if he knows what I've done, he certainly doesn't want to have anything to do with me. Mmm. I feel guilty. I feel this, I feel this and I don't feel that God is close. But when we look at the word of God and we believe the word of God, that he is very near, that he is close to the brokenhearted and saves those that are crushed in spirit.
Speaker 3 53:55 That's truth. And there were times when we are grieving. If someone said, you know, God is in control and God is like, yeah, I know that. And yes, I believe that right now. My mind is, he goes, we had different things we're angry at sometimes and God can handle that. He understands like, God, I'm mad at you right now. Now I know the truth, but I feel mad at you right now. And God's like, are I understand. I knew you were going to feel that way before you even felt that way. You know? So there's those times that we have to stand on the truth of the word and the truth of who God is and the truth about what God says about us, that we are forgiven, that we are his children, that he is for us.
Speaker 3 54:46 He's not against us. He loves us and not with a human type love. It's a love that we can't. We can take a hold of it. We can't possibly understand that the depth of that love, you know, with our, our little pea brains. So we have to stand on the truth of these things and then eventually feeling can come along behind that and confirm those truths. But when we are led by feelings of I'm guilty, I've done these things, these things wrong. So God is mad at me and these people and I'll never be this and, and I'm not adequate for this and God is not near and he really doesn't care about me. That's fine for you to, to have that relationship with him, but I can't really have that relationship because you know, I no those, those are all feelings that Hey, if you're being honest and you're having those feelings, that's great.
Speaker 3 55:37 But when we lead with those feelings, it leads us further away from the truth many times. And then when we start speaking out of fear and we start speaking out of depression, we start speaking out of those things and then we make decisions on those things. There's times where we have to have, here it is faith that that truth really is truth. And we look at it and go, okay, if that is true, how is my brain going to catch up to that when I feel so far the other way? That's nothing that we can do on our own that has to be God doing those things. And you know what? If you ask him with Thanksgiving being for nothing but in everything with prayer and petition with Thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Speaker 3 56:32 So that's even truth. So ask him, God, will you do this in me? Will you do this in me? Will you do this and me? Why wouldn't he? Right? Why wouldn't he? And so, so for those listening, I would just say, find out what the truth is and let it be a movable in your life. And when you're feeling a certain way, feel that way. Tell God about it and say, God, please let my feelings and my heart line up with your word. Can you make that straight? And God is big enough to handle whatever we're feeling at at whatever time. And that's one of the big lessons is to, uh, to know that God understands. But truth is a moveable and stand on truth, not, not feelings.
Speaker 1 57:19 Right. That's so good. I think the songs are a good place to see that. David told God when he was mad, when he was upset and even when he was scared any, any, any leaned on him. And it's just so good. I love, um, <inaudible> I love Peter, right? Because we can see his emotions just on the page. I'm not going to do anything like that. Jesus. I'm in die for you. Okay. Listen. Right? Here's your situation. Peter, tell me that in about eight hours because here you're, you're going to be off the charts, you know? Um, but Jesus came back to him, right? They, they, they met again and he came back to him because you're exactly right because God says to us, I can handle it. And I knew you were going to feel that way before you felt it. Right?
Speaker 3 58:18 And then when you're done with these feelings, when you're done with this, this whole thing, you know, then, uh, we're going to do some really cool things on the other side,
Speaker 1 58:26 right? And it'll sit with us in it.
Speaker 3 58:28 Yeah. And then we have even more resolved on the other side. And by the way, we are human. You're still gonna mess up. We're still going to have wavering feelings. There's times we're tired and the enemy knows he's an opportunist and he knows how to stack that at just the right time. And he will attack us in the areas of our passion. Uh, that's why you hear many comedians commit suicide. Many comedians going through depression and they, they'll have an act on stage, but when they go home, it's, it's depression and suicide. That's one example. Um, and so when the enemy attack, why wouldn't that be the area that we're attacked in? You know, whatever your area of passion is, you know, you can expect that from the enemy, but you know, God is greater than those things and God can certainly overcome. Uh, since he over Jesus overcame the grave and he lives inside of us.
Speaker 3 59:19 Uh, we are overcomers as well through the power of Jesus that raised him from the grave. So yes, there's more power there, but we can always expect to be, be attacked in those areas that most interest us. Areas of passion are areas of expertise because if we can be rendered, if the enemy can't take our life, um, right now, if he can't, he can try to render us powerless or ineffective even. Um, because if we're ineffective, I mean if I was appointed in this person was supposed to hear the gospel on this certain night at the end of a comedy show and I'm not there to give that, you know, surely yes, God can send someone else, but he appointed me to do it that night. So, um, and the enemy knows like I'm going to, if I can make him ineffective, then that's less people that are going to have the chance to hear that. So. Hmm.
Speaker 1 00:12 Right. Which that's a, that's an encouragement because it tells us, uh, what Paul tells us just just to be on guard. Yeah. We should just be on guard. We're just going to be ready. You know, we're going to be ready. We're going to know that he's there and we're going to be ready.
Speaker 3 00:29 What's, what's really neat. All the suffering and all the pain and all of those things are on this side of heaven. It's not on the other side. If what if it were all reversed where we get to have 60 80 years, however many years of just perfect. Oh, everything is perfect. Life is great. God is walking with us, we are in the garden and everything is just perfect. And then there's an eternity of suffering and there's an eternity of, you know, other things for, for believers and everybody <inaudible> but Hey, we got a good forties, 50 60, 70, 80 years of, of perfection.
Speaker 1 01:07 Count me out.
Speaker 3 01:10 Let's be thankful for what we had with that. No, I'm glad that all that's on this side and plus it, it, uh, helps us recognize our need for a savior.
Speaker 1 01:20 I came in, one of my favorite worship leaders says that this is, I've heard him say a few times, this is what an incredibly unique opportunity we have here and to take advantage of it because this is the only time in all of eternity when we had the opportunity to worship God in the midst of our suffering. Wow. That's good. Because for all of eternity we'll be worshiping him. Exactly. You know how your son is experiencing him now, but we only have this opportunity to worship him in hardship and suffering now.
Speaker 3 01:53 What a great perspective.
Speaker 1 01:56 It's crazy, right? Crazy man. Yeah, it was, it was like a one of those like, Whoa, Whoa. I'm not to think on that for a few days. When I, when I first started, this was crazy. Oh my goodness. I feel like I should call you Mick at the end to kind of round this out
Speaker 3 02:16 mic. Hey,
Speaker 1 02:23 whatever. I feel. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like we should just kind of round it out, but um, with, with Mick, with Mick Hickman here, but Mike tell like, I thank you for sharing. Seriously. I feel like I could just say all over, over and over again, but thank you for sharing this part of your story, this hard part of your story. Um, you do share a little bit of it on stage at times. Um, and so thanks for going deeper with us and thanks for sharing that, um, part that you don't always get to share on stage.
Speaker 2 02:55 Sometimes it's just a full comedy show, but for those that are going to remember like, wait, am I going to go see this guy? And it's going to be a half hour of him just talking about his son and say, no, you get a full comedy show. I would be a miss at the end, not to have a, just a few minutes of what God has done, not reopening up a tragedy, but actually opening up a victory and passing that on to you so that we end, you know, just praising God for what he can do in everybody's life.
Speaker 1 03:20 Absolutely. And it is, um, you know, I know I said this, we didn't really know what to expect when we went to this fundraiser, but it was such an incredibly encouraging night. Um, and your show is definitely a huge part of that. So, yeah. So where, I mean, so online, where can people find you if the virus, uh, calms down? Can people see you like in real life at some point? Again,
Speaker 2 03:47 uh, if it comes down <inaudible>
Speaker 1 03:50 is there a place, I mean, we can find your calendar with a bunch of, like to be announced to be announced if it's, if it's really coming.
Speaker 2 03:58 And I need to put some things on there that aren't on there, but, uh, just my kick them in comedy.com, uh, <inaudible> dot com and from there you can, uh, you can jump to my Facebook page, Twitter page, Instagram, all of those, all of those things are available there just, or just look up my Kitman comedy on Facebook, um, YouTube, um, Hickman comedy, Twitter, all those. But if you just want to go to one place and find it all, then just my Kitman comedy.com there's some videos that I've embedded right there that you can, you can look at. There's a some devotionals that are on there as well. Um, just lots of info where you can read up and see some things. And so, uh, there's a tour schedule that is on there that I do need to update, but things are on hold right now, so I don't know what needs to put on there yet. There's a Canadian tour coming up this fall or, or, um, this fall or winter. Uh, Bob and I are doing another show in may if it's not canceled. We'll see. It's in Bryan college station. So, um, but, uh, so we're, you know, a lot of the comics there, they're on hold right now, so we're not sure what dates to put out there, so we don't wanna put anything out that's going to be untrue and then change it. But, but yeah, go to my website. Everything is there and uh, you can get all the info.
Speaker 1 05:19 Awesome. I will link that in the notes for this episode so that everybody can see it. And um, if it's okay with you, I mainly a video or two of clips that happened to be my favorites, uh, just to give people a little, just give people a little encouragement, a little comfort, a little laughter in this time. I think we're all, it's, it's, it's either I'm on Instagram more than I am any other social media and I'm not there a ton, but I feel like it's, it's every other. Then when I scroll like every other post, it's either a funny meme or a very, very serious, uh, you know, sermon clip or a Bible verse. And it's just kind of like those three, like kind of over and over and over again. And, um, I love to be encouraged by the word and sermons, but I'm kind of digging the funny memes these days. I'm kind digging the funny videos,
Speaker 2 06:14 good ones. They really are. And I'm hoping to put up some new videos and content, uh, real, real soon. So some of the things that's been on there has been on there for a year or more. But uh, enjoy the, enjoy those. But there is some new material that we'll be landing, but uh, some of the places that those are probably gonna be recorded where up in the air for right now. So keep tuning back. Can, you know, those things will come up in the meantime. Uh, me just like mini comics where we will be putting out some, uh, other type videos that aren't necessarily stand up videos, just some, uh, funny other ones as well. And uh,
Speaker 1 06:49 well we appreciate you guys, especially right now because like we're, we're all home. Ain't got nothing to do. So we're looking to you guys, we're looking to you guys to entertain us right now and um, and provide some of that relief. Really though it's, it's good. And when it can come from a place of truth and a face, a face based place, it really is. It really ministers. So thanks again, Mike for coming on. I appreciate it so much.
Speaker 2 07:16 It is certainly my pleasure and I'm so glad you asked me to be on means a lot.
